Gerhard Schneider


Professor Schneider is Chief Information Officer and Director of the Computing Center at the University of Freiburg. He studied mathematics and physics at the University of Erlangen and at the University of Oxford and completed his Ph.D. in Essen in 1981. From 1980 to 1992 he worked as research assistant and lecturer at the University of Essen and was in charge of data processing at the newly founded Department of Experimental Mathematics starting in 1989. He gained considerable experience abroad in Sydney, Zurich, Virginia Tech and the IBM T.J. Watson Research Laboratory. In 1992 he accepted a position as interim professor in Paderborn. In 1997 he became director of the “Gesellschaft für Wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung” in Göttingen, the joint computing centre of the University of Göttingen and the Max Planck Society, and in 1999 he accepted a position as C4 professor for practical computer science at the University of Göttingen. From October 2003 to March 2008 he was vice rector for knowledge transfer and communication systems at the Albert‐Ludwig University.
