H2IOSC Training Environment

The H2IOSC Training Environment platform was developed to address the growing need for a structured and accessible system to manage and deliver educational content, particularly for modular and reusable digital learning resources. Designed as part of the PNRR Humanities and Cultural Heritage Italian Open Science Cloud, the platform is a collaborative effort between ETT S.p.A. and the CNR Institute of Computational Linguistics ‘Antonio Zampolli’ of Pisa (CNR-ILC), part of CLARIN-IT. It aims to support modern teaching practices while managing training materials according to the FAIR principles within the CLARIN-IT community and beyond.

From the student’s perspective, the platform allows the creation of an account with a personal profile that includes the courses attended and certifications obtained. Students can enrol independently in open-access and restricted-access courses, the latter requiring a code provided by the instructor. Courses will be in Italian and English. Additionally, the platform offers integrated chat and forum functionalities for interacting with other users.

From the instructor’s side, the platform features a fast and intuitive editing system that enables structuring teaching materials across three hierarchical levels. At the course level, a grid is provided for the general syllabus following the RDA Minimal Metadata Schema for Learning Resources. The module level is an intermediate layer, describing parts of the teaching activities using the same metadata model. Finally, at the teaching material level, instructors can manage the actual content of each module. Here, they can organise materials into folders dedicated to individual lessons, upload documents in text, video, or image format, or provide links to online lessons hosted on third-party services (such as Big Blue Button, Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet). These links are integrated into the platform’s dedicated ‘events’ section and corresponding calendar.
