SSHOC Online Information Sessions: Open-Source Vocabulary Hosting and Management Platforms

As part of the SSHOC activities, CLARIN is organizing a series of online events to raise awareness about open-source vocabulary hosting and management platforms:

  • 3 September 2020: First session - Introduction to Wikibase Vocabulary Platform 
  • 14 September 2020: Second session - Introduction to Skosmos Vocabulary Platform 
  • 30 September 2020: Third session - Introduction to Cessda Vocabulary Service

First session - Introduction to Wikibase Vocabulary Platform

About the presenters

Jens Ohlig

Partner relationship manager at Wikimedia Deutschland. Part of the Wikidata project and Wikibase, the software behind Wikidata, since the beginning. He works on partner relationships with Wikimedia projects including libraries, such as the Wikibase installation at the German National Library to integrate their authority file GND.

Georgina Burnett

Partner relationship manager at Wikimedia Deutschland. In this role, Georgina manages data partnerships related to Wikidata and Wikibase. Partners can come from a range of sectors, with GLAMs (galleries, libraries, archives and museums) making up the bulk of these partnerships.

Barbara Fisher

Barbara is a scientist in Humanities and an art manager. She works as communication manager and liaison counsel at the Office for Library Standards at the German National Library fostering cross-domain collaborations and cooperations concerning the GND, the common authority control for German-speaking countries.

Sarah Hartmann

Sarah works as a librarian at the Office for Library Standards at the German National Library (DNB). There she is part of the team which is responsible for the authority file – Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND) – which is used in libraries and numerous other institutions in the German-speaking countries.


Second session - Introduction to Skosmos Vocabulary Platform

About Skosmos

In this session of the series, you will get acquainted with SKOSMOS, a web-based tool providing services for accessing controlled vocabularies, which are used by indexers describing documents and searchers looking for suitable keywords. Vocabularies are accessed via SPARQL endpoints containing SKOS vocabularies.

SKOSMOS has been developed by the National Library of Finland. You can view a demo here. It is used by ACDH-CH, Norwegian National Library and the EU Publications Office.

About the presenters

Mikko Lappalainen

Mikko Lappalainen is a development Manager at the National Library of Finland. Mikko is the head of the Finto ontology service that develops an ecosystem of linked open data ontologies and tools. Mikko is also involved in developing other shared metadata, LOD and AI related systems within memory institutions in Finland.

Darren Bell 

Darren Bell is currently Director of Technical Services for the UK Data Service and Co-Investigator for the UK Smart Meter Research Portal, a £6 million investment by EPSRC to deliver a world-class smart meter data repository for academic researchers by the end of 2020. His professional interests include leveraging graph and semantic web technologies to deliver cross-disciplinary analytics at scale. He has worked in a variety of IT roles in both the private and public sectors since the early nineties, firstly as a network engineer, then as an Infrastructure Manager, then moving into the development and architecture arena. He has been at the UK Data Archive at the University of Essex since 2012, overseeing the transformation of the repository from a traditional social sciences file and SQL-based infrastructure into an interdisciplinary data platform, underpinned by Hadoop and large-scale graph data models.

Klaus Illmayer

Klaus Illmayer holds a PhD for Theatre, Film and Media Studies from University of Vienna. At ACDH-CH he is part of the team that is involved in the Horizon 2020 project SSHOC (Social Sciences and Humanities Open Cloud). He is also co-convenor of the DARIAH working group "Standards and Guidelines". One of his interests are semantic technologies around ontology development and vocabulary management. Matej Durco

Matej Ďurčo is head of the ACDH-CH's technical working group "Services" and was one of the key figures in founding the institute. In his role as head of the ACDH-CH's technical group, he has been coordinating the development of applications and the provision of services for the numerous projects of the institute and its cooperation partners. His focus lies on building and providing a consolidated portfolio of technical solutions, striving to offer the most appropriate tools for specific requirements of individual projects. His specific interests are semantic technologies, especially controlled vocabularies, information visualization and resource discovery. About CESSDA Vocabulary Service

In this information session, you will learn about the CESSDA Vocabulary Service that enables users to discover, browse and download controlled vocabularies in a variety of languages. The service is provided by the Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA).

The majority of the source (English) vocabularies included in the service have been created by the DDI Alliance. The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) is an international standard for describing data produced by surveys and other observational methods in the social, behavioural, economic, and health sciences.

About the presenters

Taina Jääskeläinen

Taina is terminologist-translator at Finnish Social Science Data Archive. Expertise areas include multilingualism and translation issues in research data services, metadata standardization and controlled vocabularies. Taina is the content contact for CESSDA Data Catalogue and CESSDA Vocabulary Service, chairing their User Groups. She has been involved for many years in the content development of multilingual and cross-nationally used controlled vocabularies such as European Language Social Science Thesaurus (ELSST) and the vocabularies created for DDI documentation standard. The DDI standard is used world-wide to describe research data, particularly in social sciences.

Johan Fihn Marberg

Johan Fihn Marberg is the IT Director of the Swedish National Data Service, SND, where he leads a multi-functional team of developers and other technicians. He has many years of experience in the domain of research data management and data publication from working in various positions within SND.

These sessions are suitable for academic or industry professionals who operate, integrate and manage vocabulary platforms, such as librarians, information specialists, knowledge management engineers, etc.
