The CLARIN@universities workshop will take place on 4 and 5 November 2019 in Utrecht (lunch-to-lunch).
This workshop on the experience with the integration of CLARIN content into university programmes is organised by the Knowledge Infrastructure Committee.
Background | Approach | Workshop participants | Workshop programme | Workshop materials | Getting there
Important note for those travelling from Schiphol to Utrecht between 1 and 3 November: Between Friday 1 November and Sunday 3 November, the railway company (NS) is working on the tracks, and the direct train connection from Schiphol to Utrecht Central Station cannot be taken. Instead you need to take a train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station and from Amsterdam Central Station you can take the intercity train to Utrecht Central Station. |
Background
In order for CLARIN to have a lasting impact, it is necessary for both methodological and infrastructural issues to become integrated in university curricula. This is already part of the CLARIN Strategic Planning 2018-2020 where one of the strategic objectives listed in section 4.2 says: Develop best practices for enhancing MA and PhD programmes to teach about the digital research methods needed to effectively use the CLARIN tools and resources. With this workshop we propose first steps towards this objective.
Approach
Legal and practical possibilities and opportunities to influence university curricula vary widely, not only from country to country but also from university to university in a country, often even from department to department. On the basis of this observation it seems wise not to go for one solution that would work everywhere, but rather to adopt the following approach:
- We conduct a survey of the current state of affairs wrt. to CLARIN’s presence in university programmes in our network, we collect info on key national initiatives & key national experts with important experience in this field.
- We organize an internal workshop where the results of the survey are presented and where the participants comment on the survey and present their own experience and share their biggest obstacles and discuss possible solutions, and where we also discuss how this experience can be better shared within and across the CLARIN consortia.
- On the basis of the findings of the workshop we will make recommendations for best practice, identify methods and materials that can be shared, and make plans for targeted actions to improve the situation.
Workshop participants
National Coordinators were invited to nominate a key person from their country with the most experience with integrating CLARIN into university curricula (either first-hand teaching experience or curriculum building in general).
