VLO updated with advanced search facilities

The VLO facted browser, now at its new host vlo.clarin.eu, has been upgraded to the new minor version 3.3. The major addition to this version is the support for advanced querying by means of a relatively intuitive syntax based on that of Lucene. Such queries can be entered directly into the 's search box, and may include operators such as AND, OR and NOT, and can also be used to search in specific fields.

Digital Humanities workshop
By Czech National consortium LINDAT/CLARIN

On September 24, 2015, the Czech National Consortium LINDAT/CLARIN organized a one-day Digital Humanities Workshop in Prague. The workshop took place under the auspices of the Czech Ministry of education, youth and sport and it was supported also by the EHRI and CESSDA research infrastructures.

The programme of the  workshop consisted of invited talks given by representatives of European large research infrastructures, plenary talks by two representatives of Czech research infrastructures involved in European programmes, presentations of 18 posters prepared by Czech research teams and two panel discussions, one of which was devoted to the issues of what infrastructures may offer to the users, and the other to the requirements and wishes  of users.

At the end of the workshop the participants were invited to visit the MALACH Center (part of LINDAT-CLARIN) to get acquainted with the video archive of the holocaust testimonies and to have an opportunity to search in the archive.

The workshop was attended by 65 participants from the Czech Republic. The talks were simultaneously translated between Czech and English. The immediate response of the participants was very positive and the discussion was lively and interesting. The invited guests from abroad were pleasantly surprised by the richness of the programme and by the active interest of the participants.

The chair of the preparatory committee was the Czech CLARIN national coordinator Eva Hajičová and the members were  Jindřich Krejčí,  Michal Frankl, Jan Hajič, and Jaroslava Hlaváčová.

UNESCO Memory of the World Register to recognize collections in The Language Archive

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has added to its Memory of the World register 64 collections from The Language Archive at the MPI. These materials contain documentation from 102 different languages spoken around the world.

The Language Archive (TLA) at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics preserves language materials for the future, and makes them available for scientific research and use by the wider public, among other things. The complete archive holds more than 20.000 hours of audio-visual materials from over 200 different languages. The collections added to the Memory of the World register contain unique recordings and texts of minority languages, many of which are in danger of becoming extinct.
