Vacancy: member of CLARIN ERIC board of directors

As of the autumn of 2019 the CLARIN European Research Infrastructure Consortium (CLARIN ) will have an opening for the position of member of the Board of Directors (20% fte). The appointment will be for a term of two years, with the possibility of prolongation for another term of two years.

Vacancy: External Relations Officer

CLARIN ERIC wants to reinforce its external communication and outreach capacity and has created a job opening for an External Relations Officer (60-100% of a full-time position).
 
The External Relations Officer will be assigned the following tasks:

  • developing an external relations strategy for CLARIN ERIC that covers the interaction with the relevant networks and stakeholders, the opportunities of external funding geared towards research infrastructures, the role of CLARIN in relation to the European Open Science agenda, and the online presence of CLARIN;
  • designing a plan for implementing the strategy in close collaboration with the Board of Directors;
  • contributing to the implementation of the strategy, including updating of the existing dissemination materials, and taking steps towards increased visibility and more effective communication within relevant networks, and coordination of funding applications, all in close collaboration with the CLARIN support staff.

The position will remain open until filled; reviewing of applications will start on 21 June 2019.

CLARIN Annual Conference 2019 
30 September - 2 October, Leipzig, Germany 

We are delighted to announce  Professor Elke Teich (University of the Saarland, Saarbrücken, Germany) as one of the keynote speakers at CLARIN2019.

Elke Teich is Professor of English Linguistics and Translation Studies at the  Department of Language Science and Technology at Saarland University and a Principal Investigator within the Cluster of Excellence Multimodal Computing and Interaction and the CLARIN-D project. She is the Head of the Collaborative Research Center on Information Density and Linguistic Encoding (SFB 1102).

Elke Teich's research interests include the use of language technology for the digital humanities, data-driven approaches to linguistics, and human translation, as well as the role of information-theoretic optimization in human communication.

Tour de CLARIN: Denmark

Denmark has been a member of CLARIN ERIC since February 2012 and is one of its founding members. The Danish infrastructure CLARIN-DK was funded through two projects, the DK-CLARIN (2008-2010), and the DIGHUMLAB project (2011-2017). The proceedings of the DHN2019 TwinTalks workshop (initiated by CLARIN) and the Digital Humanities in the Nordic Countries conference have now been published:

 
EOSC-hub welcomes applications for their Early Adopter Programme

The Early Adopter Programme is meant for research communities interested in exploring the latest state-of-art technologies and services offered by the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The ultimate goal of the programme is to gain insight into researchers’ needs and, with their participation, drive the future developments of the EOSC.

The Offer
For a period of 6 to 12 months, depending on the complexity of the application, the selected applicants will receive:

  • Support from expert staff providing the services, who will enable integrating activities with the EOSC resources;
  • The technical infrastructure needed for piloting technical solutions;

  • Resources up to 150 CPU cores, 300 GB of RAM, 2 TB of storage for data analysis and 10 TB for long term archiving;

  • Financial support to cover the applicants’ travel costs to attend face-to-face meetings and other relevant events.

Researchers and research communities dealing with grand-societal challenges that require the combined use of multiple services and resources are invited to apply to the programme.

The application deadline is 15 June 2019.

CLARIN Federated Content Search 2.0 

The CLARIN Federated Content Search, CLARIN- 2.0 is a new major release, that brings groundbreaking new features and capabilities to the linguistic search of corpora.

The goal of CLARIN-FCS is to introduce an interface specification that makes it possible to search different repositories of text within a unified framework by decoupling the search engine functionality from its exploitation and to allow services to access heterogeneous search engines in a uniform way.

CLARIN and PARTHENOS TwinTalks: Understanding collaboration in DH

A full-day workshop entitled TwinTalks: Understanding Collaboration in DH took place during the 4th Digital Humanities in the Nordic Countries Conference.

The aim of the workshop was to get a better understanding of the dynamics on the digital humanities work floor. The approach chosen was based on presentations of real-life examples of such collaborations.

The event, which was organised by Steven Krauwer and Darja Fišer, brought together 28 researchers involved in interdisciplinary projects where humanities scholars and technical experts closely collaborate in answering humanities research questions in various disciplines. All eight papers presented at the event were co-authored by one or more humanities researchers and one or more digital experts who work side by side on a research problem.

User involvement workshop on Latvian treebank
Blog post written by Inguna Skadiņa (CLARIN Latvia)

Inguna Skadiņa, the national coordinator of CLARIN Latvia organized a hands-on workshop on how to search in the Latvian Treebank. In the workshop, the participants were introduced to the hybrid dependency-constituency grammar model of the Latvian Treebank, with dependency roles and phrase structures. In the hands-on session, typical queries such as searching for a complex phrase or a subordinate clause, were introduced and examined. Read all about it in the blog post
 

CLARIN ParlaFormat workshop

Read about the CLARIN ParlaFormat workshop in which an outline of a standard format was presented for parliamentary data to the research community, to assess the support for it, and to identify potential or real problems for its development and wide adoption. The workshop was  organized by the CLARIN Interoperability Committee, a subcommittee of CLARIN’s National Coordinators’ Forum.

ACORFORMed: Virtual Reality for Training Doctors to Break Bad News 

Magalie Ochs and Philippe Blache talk about ACORFORMed. This project aims to develop a virtual reality environment with an embodied conversational agent with high-level natural language communication skills. This naturally communicating virtual agent will be used in the framework of a specific task-oriented situation: training doctors to break bad news.

Social Sciences & Humanities Open Cloud workshop at LIBER 2019

Social Sciences & Humanities Open Cloud workshop is a pre-conference workshop of LIBER 2019. The aim of the workshop is to present the SSHOC Project, the SSH Open Marketplace, and activities towards building expertise for users such as the SSHOC Training Network and Toolkit. The presentations will be followed and complemented by asking the workshop attendees to provide their input in an interactive session about their needs for skills development and training.

Biographical Data in a Digital World 2019 (BD2019)
5-6 September 2019, Varna, Bulgaria

Following the inaugural conference held in Amsterdam in 2015 (BD2015) and Linz in 2017 (BD2017), the 3rd Conference on Biographical Data in a Digital World will take place in Varna, immediately following RANLP2019. BD2019 is locally organized by the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IICT-BAS)

This conference aims at bringing together researchers from both the humanities and the computer sciences to exchange experiences, methods and practices with respect to ICT-mediated quantitative and qualitative analysis of biographical data. 

The call for papers is still open. The deadline for full paper submissions is extended to 7 June 2019.

Call for applications: EUDAT CDI & PRACE Summer School 
23-27 September 2019, Trieste, Italy

Collaborative Data Infrastructure (CDI) and the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) are organizing a Summer School on "Managing scientific data from analysis to long term archiving" and the call for applications is open.

The school aims to build the foundational skills for managing and processing data within complex research environments. Starting from real use cases, the school will focus on all the steps that comprise a typical research data lifecycle (data discovery; data processing; data analysis; data preservation and publishing), combining lectures frontal lessons with hands-on sessions.

Call for papers: “AIUCD 2020 - The Inevitable Turn: Challenges and Perspectives in Humanities Computing" 
15-17 January 2020, Milan, Italy

The Italian Association of Digital Humanities (AIUCD) is pleased to announce the ninth edition of its annual conference: "AIUCD 2020 - The Inevitable Turn: Challenges and Perspectives in Humanities Computing". The conference will be held at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan.

The local organiser is the CIRCSE Research Centre. CIRCSE is a pluri- and interdisciplinary research centre specialising in Computational Linguistics, Natural Language Processing and Information Extraction with a particular focus on ancient languages and texts.

The official languages of the conference are Italian and English.

The Call for Papers is now open and the deadline for submitting proposals is 8 September 2019.

2nd Call for Course and Workshop Proposals: ESSLLI 2020 
August 2020, Utrecht, The Netherlands

You are invited to submit proposals for courses and workshops for the 32nd European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information (ESSLLI 2020).

Under the auspices of FoLLI, the European Summer School in Logic, Language, and Information (ESSLLI) is organized every year in a different European country. It takes place over two weeks in the summer in Europe, hosts approximately 50 different courses at both the introductory and advanced levels, and attracts around 400 participants each year from all around the world.

We would like to encourage researchers to submit proposals for courses and workshops related to CLARIN! Please contact your national consortium or CLARIN ERIC if you have any CLARIN-related questions. Successful course and workshop proposals can be submitted for (co-) funding through the CLARIN ERIC Call for User Involvement Event Proposals.

Survey for new online corpus of German literary texts

You are invited to fill in the online survey for a new online corpus of German literary texts that has been developed within a Ph.D. program in linguistics, coordinated by the University of Bergamo & the University of Pavia, in Italy.

The new online corpus will soon be available online for research purposes within the Universal Dependencies (UD) project. Your input is required to help improve this linguistic resource.

Fancy a PhD in Italy?
Call for submission for PhD courses at the University of Macerata

The University of Macerata offers PhD Courses aiming at further enhancing and qualifying the the third level training offer.

The Doctoral School (SDA) defines the strategies for the best implementation of the courses, with reference to the ministerial evaluation parameters, and coordinates the planning of the training and scientific activities of the courses, while preserving the indispensable diversity of the various doctoral programs. The school places great emphasis on interdisciplinarity, innovation and international cooperation, giving a strong impulse to the international mobility of doctoral students.

The call is open to submit application for five different courses of the XXXV cycle (AA. 01/11/2019 – 31/10/2022). More details are available (in Italian) on the university's website.
