The call for Steven Krauwer awards is open. In 2019, Steven Krauwer Awards will be given in the following categories:
- Young CLARIN Researcher.The intended goal of this award is to promote a young person or a group of cooperating young persons below the age of 35
- CLARIN Achievement.The intended goal of this award is to recognize the work of a person or a group of cooperating people.
These awards, named in honour of Steven Krauwer (the first executive director of CLARIN ) are given annually to outstanding scientists or engineers in recognition of outstanding contributions toward CLARIN goals in the areas of language resource building, tool or service development, exemplary use cases, user involvement or knowledge sharing.
Tour de CLARIN Visits Italy!
Tour de CLARIN visits the Italian CLARIN consortium CLARIN-IT, which has been a full member of CLARIN ERIC since October 2015.
Recently two Tour de CLARIN blog posts have been published: CLARIN IT presents: MERLIN - A Written Learner Corpus for Czech, German, and Italian, presenting the MERLIN corpus, a written learner corpus for Czech, German, and Italian in order to illustrate the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) with richly annotated authentic learner data and CLARIN-IT presents LexO: Where Lexicography Meets the Semantic Web, introducing LexO a collaborative web editor used for the creation and management of (multilingual) lexical and terminological resources as linked data resources.

CLASSLA Officially Recognized as CLARIN Knowledge Centre
CLARIN ERIC is proud to announce the recent establishment of the CLARIN Knowledge Centre for South Slavic languages (CLASSLA).
The CLARIN Knowledge Centre for South Slavic languages (CLASSLA) offers expertise on language resources and technologies for South Slavic languages. Its basic activities are (1) giving researchers, students, citizen scientists and other interested parties information on the available resources and technologies via its documentation, (2) supporting them in producing, modifying or publishing resources and technologies via its helpdesk and (3) organizing training activities.
CLASSLA is operated by CLARIN.SI.

Language Technology for Icelandic 2018-2022 - Project Plan Now Available in English
In October 2016, the Minister of Education, Science and Culture appointed a special language technology steering group which commissioned three language technology experts to work out a detailed Project Plan for Icelandic language technology.
The report "Máltækni fyrir íslensku 2018-2022 - Verkáætlun" ("Language Technology for Icelandic 2018-2022 - Project Plan") which has now been translated into English, is the conclusion of a workgroup, which the steering group assembled to evaluate the status of Icelandic language technology and to create a five-year project plan.
The Project Plan has a special chapter on CLARIN where the importance of Iceland joining CLARIN ERIC is emphasized. Iceland will benefit from membership in gaining access to a great number of tools and resources, and to expertise in several matters. A great number of resources and tools will be developed within their Language Technology Program, and described and stored according to standards adopted within CLARIN. The Project Plan points out that CLARIN will provide invaluable assistance in these matters.
PARTHENOS Releases New Training Module “Digital Humanities Research Questions and Methods”
The PARTHENOS Project has released a new training module aimed at Humanities researchers and Cultural Heritage practitioners entitled “Digital Humanities Research Questions and Methods”. The module, which can be accessed here, addresses the question of how to develop research questions in Digital Humanities (DH), and demonstrates how digital research infrastructures can support the researcher in finding data in digital collections, working with them, and adding new data to these collections.
The new module was mainly written by Dr. Darja Fišer (University of Ljubljana, Director of User Involvement CLARIN ERIC) and Jakob Lenardič (University of Ljubljana), and coordinated by Dr. Ulrike Wuttke from the PARTHENOS Training team with input from the team responsible for community involvement and requirements.

CLARIN Workshop DELAD: Database Enterprise for Language And speech Disorders
Martin Ball & Nicola Müller (Linköping University, Sweden) organised two workshops in Linköping, Sweden, in 2015 and 2016, in which available resources and issues related to accessibility were inventorised. These workshops resulted in the DELAD initiative. From these workshops it was concluded that (1) only a minority of existing Corpora of Disordered Speech (CDS) can be made accessible due to privacy constraints, (2) we now have the know-how to collect new resources that can be shared according to FAIR principles, and (3) the CLARIN infrastructure is indispensable for this purpose.
The second CLARIN DELAD workshop (a CLARIN Type II workshop) took place in Utrecht on 28-30 January 2019. The goal of this workshop was to review the status of the actions set out in the first workshop, exchange deeper insights on ethical and legal aspects of CDS collection against the background of the GDPR, and come up with a plan for primary special needs for the CLARIN infrastructure to host CDS, and a feasible plan to spend 3 PM ICT developer time on this infrastructure.

The HUN-CLARIN Roadshow in Debrecen

Read about the workshopon Use of Corpora, Language Technology Tools and Data Driven Methods in Human Sciences that took place on 7 February 2019 at the Regional Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Debrecen, Hungary. This was the second HUN-CLARIN Roadshow in Debrecen which aimed to promote the use of software tools such as corpora, query tools, analytical software, etc., and data driven methods among students, teachers and researchers in the field of linguistics and humanities and social sciences.
CLARIN-PL Visits South Africa
CLARIN-PLvisited South Africa and hosted a Wordnet Loom workshop from 25–27 February at Leriba Lodge. Twenty-two linguists representing nine different languages attended the workshop. Most of these participants are novice wordnet developers, but experts in linguistics and translation for their languages.
CLARIN-PL also visited the SADiLaR hub. The visit included meetings with management as well as other SADiLaR team members to share ideas about services provided by CLARIN centres. Jan Wieczorek made a presentation on the tools and resources avaialble from the CLARIN-PL repository. This visit followed a visit by SADiLaR’s technical manager, Dr Roald Eiselen, to Europe in 2018, and SADiLaR plans to be working with CLARIN-PL on various projects in the future.

Costanza Navarretta is associate professor at the Centre for Language Technology, Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics, University of Copenhagen. She gave the second keynote talk at CLARIN2018 on Speech and gestures: computational linguistic studies.

South African Language Celebration Events
As part of UNESCO's celebration of indigenous languages, SADiLaR is celebrating the 11 official languages of South Africa by assigning each language to a month of the year. SADiLaR is hosting language celebration events at various universities in South Africa to share ideas and take action in creating awareness of our languages and in working on the development of our languages and language resources.

The first upcoming language eventwill be held in April. SADiLaR has dedicated this month to celebrate Afrikaans as an official language of South Africa.

9th Language and Technology Conference (LTC 2019)

First LiLa Workshop: Linguistic Resources & NLP Tools for Latin
3-4 June 2019, Milan, Italy
The ERC-funded project LiLa: Linking Latin - Building a Knowledge Base of Linguistic Resources and Tools for Latin is delighted to announce its first workshop, which will take place at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan.
LiLa responds to the growing need in the fields of Computational Linguistics, Humanities Computing and Classics to create an interoperable Knowledge Base of linguistic resources and NLP tools for Latin. To this end, LiLa makes use of Linked Open Data (LOD) practices and standards to connect words to textual and lexical resources currently distributed across the web.
This workshop brings together over twenty scholars from around the world responsible for the creation of tools and resources for Latin with a view to understanding their present state of development and discussing their potential integration in the LiLa Knowledge Base.
Registration is open until 30th April 2019 and it free of charge.
Call for Papers: ADHO SIG for Digital Humanities Pedagogy and Training Mini-conference and Meeting

The Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO) Special Interest Group for Digital Humanities Pedagogy and Training invites submissions for a special mini-conference “The Complexities of Teaching DH in Global Contexts” to be held Tuesday, 9 July 2019 from 9:00 to 13:00 at the DH2019conference.
Building upon the DH2019 conference theme, "Complexities", the ADHO Special Interest Group is eager to foster a discussion about the many ways in which DH is taught and learned in academic contexts across languages, borders, cultures, and academic structures.
European Summer University (ESU 2019)

This year marks the 10 year anniversary of the European Summer University (ESU) at the University of Leipzig that will take place from 23 July to 2 August 2019.
The goal of the summer school is to provide an intensive course programme for international students and scholars in the digital humanities in their early career stages to receive additional training in digital methods and tools.
The Summer University offers a range of workshops on important areas of Digital Humanities in the broadest sense. All workshops run in parallel through the 11 days. Each workshop consists of a total of 18 sessions or 36 teaching hours.

Call for Papers: DeriMo 2019
19-20 September 2019, Prague, Czech Republic
The Second International Workshop on Resources and Tools for Derivational Morphology (DeriMo 2019) follows up on the first DeriMo workshop (DeriMo 2017), which took place in Milan, Italy, in October 2017. The Prague workshopaims to continue and push forward the discussion on language resources and tools for derivational morphology (and, more generally, for word formation) and on their usage in linguistics, and to bring it closer to linguistic research into word formation.
DeriMo 2019 will be held in the Computer Science Building of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, conveniently located right in the city center of Prague.

Under the auspices of FoLLI, the European Summer School in Logic, Language, and Information (ESSLLI) is organized every year in a different European country. It takes place over two weeks in the European summer, hosts approximately 50 different courses at both the introductory and advanced levels, attracting around 400 participants each year from all the world.
