Croatia Joins CLARIN ERIC

We are very pleased to announce that on 1 March 2018 Croatia officially became a member of CLARIN , bringing the total number of full members up to twenty.

Croatia participated as an active consortium member in the preparatory phase FP7 project CLARIN, and now in 2018 the Republic of Croatia has decided to officially join CLARIN‑ERIC as a full member.

The HR-CLARIN consortium is committed to further develop the existing Croatian language resources and tools in accordance with CLARIN specifications and incorporate them into CLARIN infrastructure. “We hope that the CLARIN ERIC best practices will provide a valuable role model for planned development. In return, it will provide elaborated set of Croatian language resources and tools to the CLARIN ERIC community and valuable datasets compiled in several large topic‑oriented digitalization campaigns” says Professor Marko Tadić of the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences who has been appointed as the National Coordinator for Croatia.

Congratulations to our New CLARIN K-Centre CKLD!

We are happy to announce that the CLARIN Knowledge Centre for linguistic diversity and language documentation (CKLD)  has been officially recognized as a CLARIN K-Centre.

The CKLD is a virtual distributed centre comprising institutions at the Universities of London (ELAR/SWLI), Cologne (DCH/IfDH/IfL) and Hamburg (HZSK/INEL).

The CKLD offers expertise on data and data-related methods, technology and background information on language resources and tools to researchers – including students and native speakers. The center supports researchers from the early planning phase to the realization of language documentation and other fieldwork-based research projects as well as typological research. The center also provides information and assistance relating to fieldwork and data-related methodological aspects and in particular relating to equipment, digital tools, methods, where to find data and information, whom to contact for specialist information on particular regions or language families.

ParlaCLARIN: Keynote Speaker Announcement

We are delighted to inform you that Professor Cornelia Ilie will be the keynote speaker at ParlaCLARIN.

Cornelia is Professor of Linguistics and Rhetoric at Strömstad Akademi, Sweden and Visiting Professor at Hellenic American University, Athens, Greece.  She is the founder and president of the European Society for Transcultural and Interdisciplinary Dialogue (ESTIDIA) and a member of the Reference Group of Experts of the International Association of Universities.

Cornelia will give a presentation on “Applying Multi-Perspective Approaches to the Analysis of Parliamentary Data”, and will focus on qualitative analysis of data patterns and trends, previously aggregated through quantitative corpus linguistic analysis.

Tour de CLARIN

In March the Tour de CLARIN included two blog posts from CLARIN DLU/Flanders. The first one focused on workshops for introducing digital humanities researchers to CLARIN services and resources. The second one presented the Corpus of Contemporary Dutch (Corpus Hedendaags Nederlands - CHN), a collection of more than 800,000 texts taken from various sources such as newspapers, magazines, news broadcasts, legal writings, and books for the period between 1814 and 2013.

Plenary Debates of the European Parliament as Linked Open Data

The data from Talk of Europe is now permanently stored at -KNAW.  The Talk of Europe project curates Linked Open Data about the European Parliament (EP). This new version includes debates of the European Parliament up to 2017, EuroVoc concepts detected in all EU languages, and lots of bug fixes.

CLARIN Workshop "Translation memories, corpora, termbases: Bridges between translation studies and research infrastructures"

Workshop: Openness, Interoperability & Stewardship of Cultural Heritage Data in Research Libraries
9 April 2018, The Hague, The Netherlands

LIBER is the Ligue des Bibliothèques Européennes de Recherche, or Association of European Research Libraries. LIBER’s Digital Humanities and Digital Cultural Heritage working group will host the first feedback workshop for the Cultural Heritage Re-use Charter. The workshop will focus on three of the Charter’s principles: “Openness, Interoperability and Stewardship”. The workshop aims to gather contributions and spark debate about the three principles of openness, interoperability and stewardship and their relation to the practices of research libraries. Attendance is free. The workshop is open to all staff working in LIBER libraries and interested parties.

2nd CfP: LTDH 2018 Conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia

This is the 2nd call for papers for the conference “Language Technologies and Digital Humanities”. The deadline for submission of papers or extended abstracts is 1 April 2018.

LTDH 2018 is organised by the Slovenian Language Technologies Society (SDJT), the Centre for Language Resources and Technologies at the University of Ljubljana (CJVT) and the research infrastructures CLARIN.SI and DARIAH-SI.

1 PhD (1.0 FTE) and 1 Post-Doc (0.8 FTE) Positions in the Project ‘Time in Translation: a Semantics of the Perfect’
Utrecht University, The Netherlands

You will be participating in the project Time in Translation: a semantics of the Perfect (TinT). This project is funded by NWO, by way of a Vrije Competitie project awarded to Prof. dr. Henriëtte de Swart and dr. Bert Le Bruyn at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. The project aims to develop the meaning of the present perfect. The team will collect data from 5 languages (Dutch, English, German, French, Spanish) in parallel corpora, and analyse perfect use in relation to other verbal tense forms both at the sentence and at the discourse level. Translation experiments will be used to check the space of variation in choosing one form over another.

Researchers and Systems Developers to Participate in Swedish National e-Infrastructure Development
University of Gothenburg, Sweden

Språkbanken Text at the University of Gothenburg is one of three divisions of the recently established Swedish national research infrastructure Språkbanken (the Swedish Language Bank). The infrastructure supports research in language technology, linguistics, and language-related digital humanities, and social sciences, and is now looking for researchers, infrastructure experts,  and systems developers with a language technology specialization, who will participate in developing, maintaining and operating this infrastructure.
