CLARIN 2019: programme available!

We are delighted to announce that the programme for the CLARIN2019 Conference is now available online.
In addition to the mix of paper, poster and demo sessions and the CLARIN Bazaar, the programme also includes keynote talks by Professor Scott Rettberg(University of Bergen, Norway) and Professor Elke Teich (University of the Saarland, Saarbrücken, Germany).

Tour de CLARIN: Slovenia
In the past month we published the last blog post, an interview, from Tour de CLARIN: Slovenia. We interviewed Kaja Dobrovoljc, a Slovenian corpus linguist who works at the Centre for Language Resources and Technologies at the University of Ljubljana and regularly collaborates with CLARIN.SI and uses its infrastructure.
Tour de CLARIN: Knowledge Centres
Recently ‘Tour de CLARIN’ visited two K-Centres and published new blog posts about them. The first is an in-depth interview with Nan Bernstein Ratner, who is along with Brian MacWhinney one of the Principal Investigators (PLs) of FluencyBank, a shared database for the study of the development of fluency in typical and disordered populations. FluencyBank is part of TalkBank, a CLARIN K-Centre. The second is an overview of the Czech CLARIN Knowledge Centre for Corpus Linguistics. The centre is based at the Institute of the Czech National Corpus, Faculty of Arts, Charles University, Prague. The Czech National Corpus (CNC) is a long-term academic project with the main aim to continuously map the Czech language by building, annotating and providing access to a variety of large general-purpose corpora. It has been recognized by CLARIN as a Knowledge-Centre in 2018.

Data Management in the Humanities: Progress in the Standardisation of Metadata Formats for Language-related Research Data

In July 2019, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published a new standard which contributes to describing language-related research data in a significant and sustainable way during archiving. The Standard ISO 24622-2 "Component Metadata Specification Language"standardizes procedures for defining a schema for descriptions tailored to requirements of specific types of research data.
Metadata experts from the CLARIN infrastructure initiative were significantly involved in the development of this standard. With the CLARIN-Component Registry, CLARIN
provides a reference implementation that employs the standard.

Lorentz workshop: Digital Humanities - The African Perspective
Watch the documentary ‘Lorentz workshop: Digital Humanities - The African Perspective’ that took place from 1-5 July 2019 in the Lorentz Center in Leiden.
The workshop aimed at the articulation of the specific developments in the field of digital humanities (DH) that are taking shape in Africa and their potential to enhance the global DH agenda. In addition, attention was given to capacity building and the planning of initiatives along the lines of ‘science4development’. The programme included introductions into the infrastructural support for DH (including training materials developed within the PARTHENOS project) and the most widely used data analysis methods within the humanities and social sciences.

Call for Papers for the Digital Humanities Quarterly Special Issue on AudioVisual in DH: Challenges and Possibilities

The Special Issue will highlight digital humanities approaches to audio and/or visual data. Contributions are welcome in multiple forms including written articles, reviews, software, and case studies. Abstracts are due 20 September 2019. Full contributions are due 30 November 2019.
DHN 2020: Call for Submissions
17–20 March 2020, Riga, Latvia
The annual conference, “Digital Humanities in the Nordic Countries,” invites submissions of proposals for its 5th conference. The DHN conferences aim to provide an overview of research, education and communication about the interdisciplinary field of digital humanities from the Nordic to the Baltic region, and beyond. The deadline for submissions is 15 September 2019.
