Applied Linguistics for Language Professions

This edX MOOC shared via CLARIN-CH covers the core concepts of Applied Linguistics for language practice and their application in the workplace. Basic theoretical knowledge is combined with practical examples, exercises, and self-checks. 

Target Level: Entry-level students who are interested in learning about the limitations and opportunities of language technologies in professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify their own and other possible stances towards communicative conventions.
  • Identify the limitations and opportunities of language technologies and consciously use them.
  • Identify and solve problems of digital divides
  • Recognise and assess linguistic variety and its function in concrete situations.
  • Deepen your knowledge of changing norms in language use online and offline.
  • Provide others with well-founded advice on controversial issues regarding inclusive language.
  • Develop strategies and criteria for using artificial intelligence in language professions.
