SAMBA: a New Committee in CLARIN
With the growth of the membership of CLARIN and with the adoption of new statutes earlier in 2018 the need was felt for a renewal of the communication model between CLARIN’s National Coordinators’ Forum (NCF) and the Board of Directors (BoD). This has led to the establishment of a subcommittee of the that is called SAMBA (short for Strategy and Management Board).
SAMBA is charged with the task of preparing the decision taking at the level of the NCF for issues related to strategic planning, and budgeting & finances. SAMBA consists of six members that are elected by and from the NCF members. As of April 2018 the composition is as follows: Erhard Hinrichs (DE), Krister Lindén (FI), Jan Odijk (NL), Maciej Piacecki (PL), Kiril Simov (BG) and Kadri Vider (EE).
CLARIN 2018: Preliminary Programme Available!
The CLARIN Annual Conference is the main annual event for those working on the construction and operation of CLARIN across Europe, as well as for representatives of the communities in the humanities and social sciences. The 2018 annual conference will take place 8-10 October 2018 in Pisa, Italy.
The CLARIN2018 programme includes keynote speeches by James Pustejovsky (Brandeis University, USA) titled CLAMIA: A Computational Linguistic Application Grid for Moving Image Archival Dataand by Costanza Navarretta (University of Copenhagen) titled Speech and gestures: computational linguistic studies. The programme also includes paper, poster and demo presentations.

Collaboration Agreement Between CLARIN ERIC and ELRA
CLARIN ERIC and the European Language Resources Association (ELRA) have recently entered into a Collaboration Agreement.
CLARIN and ELRA share areas of interest and have been developing similar activities related to the promotion and dissemination of Language Resources (LR) and Language and Speech Technologies. Strengthening the outreach to the different communities of LR users in academia and industry, and building relationships between them, are among the major benefits expected from this collaboration, which also cover:
- Business development
- Education and training
- Lobbying activities
- Joint project proposals
Tour de CLARIN: Clarin:el Introduces GrNE-Tagger
We continue Tour de CLARIN with an introduction to a tool from Clarin:el in Greece. GrNE-Tagger is a rule-based engine designed for the automatic recognition and classification of Named Entities of the following five types: PERSON, LOCATION, ORGANIZATION, FACILITY, GPE (Geo-political entity). It was developed and is maintained by the Institute for Language and Speech Processing / Athena Research Center.
CLARIN on Five Continents
It does not happen too often that we report CLARIN activities from very distant locations, but this Summer it is the case. Between May and July this year CLARIN was present at major events on five continents, which shows how far CLARIN is reaching out and leaving its mark on the global map of language resources and technology in 2018. Within Europe the CLARIN community has been busy as always (and you can find the traces on the event pages of the various consortia). Australia hosted this year’s edition of ACL, which attracted a number of contributions from CLARIN-ers.

On 24 April 2018 the online PARTHENOSwebinar “Boost your eHumanities and eHeritage research with Research Infrastructures” was held. This free online webinar was dedicated to developing research questions, especially taking into account specific details of developing research questions with Research Infrastructures such as finding, working with and contributing data to research infrastructure collections, using Virtual Research Environments (VREs), and tools. A short summary and the materials of this webinar are now available online.
New Releases of CLARIN-D Resources
New releases of the TüBa-D/Z treebankand the Royal Society Corpus (RSC)are now available. The updates on both releases have been carried out by two CLARIN-D Centres in Germany, namely Tübingenand Saarbrücken.
The TüBa-D/Z treebank is a syntactically annotated German newspaper corpus based on data taken from the daily issues of 'die tageszeitung' (taz).
The Royal Society Corpus (RSC) 4.0 is based on the first two centuries of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of Londonfrom its beginning in 1665 to 1869.

Call: Five Visiting Grants for Transnational Access to ELEXIS Infrastructure
ELEXIS is a European Infrastructure which aims to foster cooperation and knowledge exchange between different research communities in lexicography in order to bridge the gap between lesser-resourced languages and those with advanced e-lexicographic experience.
A key activity of the project is to provide transnational access to existing lexicographical milieus in Europe including the resources, tools and expertise of these groups.
The first call for visiting grants is now open. Application deadline is 6 August 2018.
DH Foresight: Gleaning the Future of Digital Methods and Infrastructures for the Humanities Foresight Workshop

On Wednesday 10 October 2018 the PARTHENOS Foresight Workshop will take place at the CLARIN Annual Conference, the workshop will start right after the conference ends at 15:30.
The Horizon 2020 project PARTHENOS is carrying out a foresight study, which is investigating how (digital) research methods, technologies and infrastructures in digital humanities and cultural heritage may develop over the next 5-10 years.
This workshop is one of a series of structured, interactive events being organised by PARTHENOS over the coming year, and aims in particular to obtain valuable input for its foresight study by curating a multi-polar discussion between representatives from various EU research infrastructure initiatives, and a range of actual or potential stakeholders in those infrastructures, including (but not restricted to) users and researchers.
Speech in the Age of Multimodal Humanities (SpAM)
Satellite Event @CLARIN2018 in Pisa, Italy
SpAM is a satellite workshop of the CLARIN Annual Conference 2018 organized by Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa.The workshop is dedicated to the study of multimodality in the speech sciences and will take place on Thursday 11 October 2018.
Papers dealing with multimodality in speech as a research topic or as a methodological choice are welcome. The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 31 July 2018.
The participation is free upon registration. Registration is open until 30 September 2018.
COST Action: Distant Reading for European Literary History
First Call for Short Term Scientific Missions Applications
COST funds pan-European, bottom-up networks of scientists and researchers across all science and technology fields. These networks, called 'COST Actions', promote international coordination of nationally-funded research.
The challenge of COST Action “Distant Reading for European Literary History“ is to create a vibrant and diverse network of researchers jointly developing the resources and methods necessary to change the way European literary history is written.
This "Action" will contribute to the development and distribution of methods, competencies, data, best practices, standards and tools relevant to Distant Reading research.
Researchers are invited to submit an application for a Short Term Scientific Mission. The submission deadline is 31 August 2018.

Postdoctoral Positions Available at CNRS
Paris, France
CNRS proposes one postdoctoral position in Digital Humanities and one in AI methods applied to any domain of the Humanities. Positions are for two years, beginning this autumn, in a CNRS research unit (in France). French is not mandatory but a good command of both French and English would be a plus.
The potential candidates must have defended their PhD after 2013, and must propose a 5 page long research project for one of the advertised positions.
