Education
CLARIN envisages the need for substantial education and training programs. These have to address a number of different purposes:
We need to inform the researchers in the humanities about the potential of the new infrastructure and establish a fruitful and creative interaction. Other than in the natural sciences where the scientific case can be deduced almost linearly by extrapolating from the past, the scientific cases and grand challenges in the humanities can only be specified through intensive interactions.
We need to make the young generations enthousiastic about the new opportunities and motivate them to actively contribute. Only the open “bazar” model will scale up so that we can expect the rich services about our cultures and languages that we expect. Making contributions may not be limited to a few experts, but should include even student classes.
We need to inform and interact with teachers in schools so that they discover the usefulness of the infrastructure for their purposes. In doing so we expect to get in contact with a broader public to make them aware of the relevance of multicultures and multilinguality. Starting with our children will help to prevent future conflicts.
